Measuring real loads

Dynamic loads challenge conventional fatigue assessment methodologies as it is difficult to model all the directions and durations of forces affecting the asset.

With Refamo's technology, real loads are measured. Thus, the dynamic effect of the forces at hand is captured.

For R&D

If the dynamic loads cannot be modelled, the prototype must be tested until structural failure in the prototype validation phase.

When testing the prototype with real loads, Refamo's technology shows the expected lifespan of the tested structures after a few days of trials. Thus, a premature failure can be detected considerably earlier.

TRANSITION TO UHSS AND HSS

UHSS & HSS

Ultra-high and high strength steels achieve often the same functionality as standard steels, but weight less and require less volume.

The gains in ultimate tensile strength are not converted proportionally to increased durability (fatigue resistance). Thus, fatigue assessments are critical in the introduction of stronger steels.

Type approvals

In some industries the use of HSS and UHSS would be beneficial, but type approval requirements dictate more conservative material choices.

In these industries, Refamo cooperates with pioneers to craft functioning fatigue assessment methods for HSS and UHSS steels, aiming for changes in regulations.

LIFE EXTENSION OF CURRENT ASSETS

End-of-life decision making

How fatigued are the critical structures of the assets? Is it safe to continue making use of them? Most nondestructive testing methods reveal whether crack initiation has begun. But if not, when will it?

Combined with NDT-methods and an estimation of the load history, Refamo's technology reveals not only if crack initiation has begun, but also when one should expect it to begin.

Crack initiation monitoring

Refamo's technology assesses the fatigue levels of the assets in real-time. The start of crack initiation at hot spots is predicted and once crack initiation begins, it is detected in the analysis.

Crack initiation triggers a warning for the operator. The safe utilization of the asset is reassessed.
